These types of publications began to appear in bookstores by the
thousands and were bought in droves by people needing to find a meaning for
their lives.
Even conservative corporate executives began to take self empowering courses with
people like Tony Robbins a man who delivers powerful seminars and programs on the
topic of personal empowerment. John Bradshaw has made a killing on the subject of
letting go of the shame that binds us.
The Self Help Support Group
We found out that our low self esteem was responsible for everything from our
inability to achieve weight loss to relationship problems. Groups began springing
up for anyone needing support to work through their anxiety regarding these issues.
The original self help group, Alcoholics Anonymous, was started as a program back
in 1934 in by a New York stockbroker and an Akron, Ohio physician to help people
control their alcoholism through complete abstinence and attending meetings were
you got support from other alcoholics who had gone before them and managed to stay
sober and improve the quality of their lives. While not easy, the meeting format
was simple, using twelve steps and traditions as a map for recovery.
The success of A.A. opened the door for other twelve step recovery oriented programs,
and some-such as anger management classes. These were incorporated into sentencing
by the courts for domestic violence offenders, who were reported to have a very
high level of low self esteem.
Self Help Books Seminars and Programs
Geared toward helping a person to stop doing something that is detrimental to their
health ( physical) or well being ( emotional, mental, spiritual) and teach a kind
of replacement therapy, these tools can be very useful. You can learn to substitute
a positive dialogue or the negative self talk or dangerous/destructive behavior.
For example, purchasing and reading a book about how to stage fright would (ideally)
learn to replace the negative self talk of putting yourself down constantly with
positive self talk through affirmations and risk taking. For a risk taking exercise
you might, say, enroll in a public speaking class at the local community college.
This type of motivational self help would have the psychological effect of allowing
you to realize a new confidence that you didn't know you possessed, thus increasing
self esteem.
What's the Difference?
While books, tapes, classes and seminars cost money, self help groups are typically
held free of charge, relying on the donations of the group to keep it running. They
do not provide medical or legal advice, only support. An abundance of material can
be found online, simply typing in the words "self help" into your favorite search
engine. You will see web site after web site offering checklists and advice.
Many offer you the opportunity to sign up for a newsletter of some sort, usually
for free or very low cost which can supply you with valuable information on an ongoing
basis.
Self help is intentional. We seek it because we choose to change something about
ourselves that we are not happy with. In a society conditioned to invoke changes
around us, we are conditioned to look out at others but not necessarily taught to
look at our own shortcomings.
Why the Pursuit of Personal Betterment Can Really Work
Because it is your decision to pursue self-help, in making that decision you
are already demonstrating a certain level of personal responsibility. In taking
that first step by visiting a web site, buying relevant material and applying the
strategy outlined therein, you will test yourself, learn new skills, and begin the
type of daily mental, emotional and some would even say spiritual exercises that
can assist you in knowingyourself better and enable you to have the life you really
want to be having.
